What is the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School of Rockland? T he Florence Melton Adult Mini-School is an exciting concept in adult Jewish learning. It is aimed at Jewish adults who want
to forge a closer link to their Jewish heritage and community. It offers a
systematic curriculum integrating Jewish practices,
holidays, history, ethics, ideas and values. Melton is part of an
international network of schools with over 8000 adult learners worldwide

The Melton
Curriculum The two-year Melton Curriculum consists of four courses, written by Hebrew University scholars and taught locally by experienced and knowledgeable faculty. First Year The Rhythms of Jewish Living Discover the sources and deeper meanings underlying Jewish holidays and lifecycle observances.. The Purposes of Jewish Living What do Jews believe? What makes Judaism unique? Probe Judaism’s foundational concepts and values as they unfold in the Bible, Talmud and later Jewish sources. Second Year The Dramas of Jewish Living What can we learn from our past? Survey the most important dilemmas in Jewish history from which we seek lessons and insights for today. The Ethics of Jewish Living How do Jewish ethical principles apply to our lives today? Explore issues of social justice, sexuality, end-of-life, family and community relationships through the study of Jewish ethical sources. Meet Our Faculty ![]() Barbara Birnbaum has a MA in Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Rabbi Paula Mack Drill was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary. She is Associate Rabbi at the Orangetown Jewish Center. Rabbi Elizabeth Dunsker is spiritual leader of Reform Temple of Suffern—Shir Shalom. Leslie Goldress is Director of Education at the New City Jewish Center Rabbi Joshua Gruenberg is rabbi of Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack. Sharon Halper is Regional Educator for the Union for Reform Judaism. Rabbi Shlomo Horowitz is a musmach of Yeshiva University and teaches at Sinai Special Needs Institute in Livingston, NJ.

School
Structure
Classes meet once per week for two hours, 30 weeks per year. Classes do not meet on Jewish holidays or winter break. Each weekly session consists of two one-hour classes with a break for informal discussion and socializing. Tuition $575 per person, $1075 per couple for 30 two-hour sessions. Includes curricular materials, however purchase of JPS Tanakh (Bible) not included.Please note : The $575 rate is communally subsidized by the CJER of the Jewish Federation of Rockland County.Students who able to pay the true tuition cost of $800 will receive a letter from the CJER acknowledging a tax deductible charitable donation of $225 per student to the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School.
